A temerini fiúk ügye

Egy szokványos, közönséges szombat éjszaka volt. Fordítva is történhetett volna, vagyis, hogy a magyar fiúkat verik össze. Sok a verekedés – mondja Zoran Petrovic, aki saját bevallása szerint hithű keresztény. Megbocsátott a temerini fiúknak. Sőt. Nemcsak megbocsátott, máig hálás is nekik, mert mint mondja, megszabadították őt a benne dúló bosszúvágytól. Ha bosszúra már nem is, de fájdalomdíjra mindenképpen fűlik a foga: 5 millió dínár (18 millió forint) kártérítést szeretne kapni a fiúk szüleitől. Mint mondja, ez jelképes összeg, akár 500 milliót is kérhetne.

Kicsoda Zoran Petrovic?

2004. június 26-án éjjel, ahogy a többi szerb és magyar fiatal, több szórakozóhelyet végigjárt az este folyamán. Újvidéken már kisebb verekedésbe keveredett, ezt követően ment fel Temerinbe. Itt újabb incidensek sora fűződik a nevéhez: a temerini Evergreen nevű klubból erőszakos viselkedése miatt (a szemtanúk állítása szerint mindenkivel kötözködött, elvette az ott szórakozók italát és cigarettáját) kidobták. Ezután megfordult a csak szerbek látogatta mulatóban, a Milanóban is, majd betért a Kaja nevű bárba. Ezt a helyet a temeriniek a drogosok és drogterjesztők törzshelyének tartják. Jóllehet, a férfi saját bevallása szerint 7-8 éve már felhagyott a terjesztéssel. Miután innen is távozott (vagy kitessékelték, ezt nem tudni), a piactér felé vette az irányt. A kötözködés itt a tettlegességig fajult: a szemtanúk szerint Petrovics igen erőszakosan viselkedett, nemzetiségi hovatartozástól függetlenül belekötött mindenkibe, és a fiatal lányokat is molesztálta.

A történet részletei innen homályba vesznek: szemtanúk beszámolói alapján sem tisztázható az ominózus este minden részlete. Annyi bizonyos, hogy mind Zoran Petrovic mind a temerini fiatalok, köztük az öt temerini fiú is, már ittas állapotban voltak. A verekedés részleteiről csak annyit tudni , hogy a szóváltást, dulakodás, majd verekedés követte. Petri, azaz Zoran Petrovicnál az ominózus estén semmilyen irat nem volt. Amikor hajnalban megtalálták, bódult állapotban mégis igazolni tudta magát. Saját bevallása szerint sem emlékezett arra, hogy pontosan hogyan és hol történt a verekedés, ennek ellenére öt temerini magyar fiú ül a mai napig előre megfontolt gyilkossági kísérlet vádjával raboskodik a sremska mitrovicai börtönben.

A titkokzatos sérülések

Az ítélet során súlyosbító körülmények számított, hogy Petrovicot nemcsak megverték, hanem kínozták is. A jegyzőkönyv tanúsága szerint Petrovic felső állkapcsa eltört, a nyelőcsöve benyomódott, a férfi végbelébe vasrudat nyomtak fel, testét megégették, s levizelték a férfit. Az esetet azonban a piactéren lévő fiatalok nem látták. Az egyik szemtanú úgy véli, ha meg is történt a borzalmas eset, biztosan nem a piactéren folyt a dulakodás, és egyáltalán nem bizonyítható, hogy az öt temerini fiúk közül bárki megkínozta volna a szerb férfit. Az orvosi leletek pedig egyértelműen bizonyítják, hogy Petrovic testén sehol sem voltak égés illetve vizeletnyomok. Ezt támasztják alá a temerini fiúk szüleinek beszámolói is, akik a verekedést követő harmadik napon meglátogatták a megvert férfit a kórházban.

Őket a szerb kisebbségügyi miniszter követte, aki nagy sajtónyilvánosság előtt érdeklődött a férfi egészségi állapota felől. Az alábbi felvételen is jól látható, hogy semmi jel nem utal arra, hogy Petrovic felső állkapcsa el lenne törve.

A felvétel az újvidéki Baleseti Sebészet Sürgösségi Osztályán készült 2004. június 29-én, kedden. 3 nappal a verekedés után. Önök szerint így néz ki akinek eltörik a felső állkapcsát, benyomják a nyelőcsövét és még fel is gyújtják?

A videón Petrovics megköszöni, az orvosnak, hogy segített neki, az orvos diagnosztizál egy sérülést, amit 2-3 hét múlva fognak összevarrni. Majd az orvos közli a miniszterrel, hogy: “Ne haragudjon, hogy ezt így, az újságírók jelenlétében mondom Önnek de nem hiszem, hogy ennek bármi köze lenne ahhoz, hogy ő más nemzetiségű, ahhoz, hogy ő szerb.” Majd Petrovics magyarázkodik még egy kicsit az újságíróknak: “Csak azt mondhatom, hogy nem nemzetiségi ügy a részemről. Egy félreértés volt. Hogy is mondjam…A “Varsó nap”-on történt. Nagyon sok fiatal volt ott. És ők ilyenek. Ez nem sovinizmus és nem nacionalizmus miatt volt részemről. Az ítélethirdetés után a “sértett” így nyilatkozott:
-Nem haragszom rájuk, szüleikre sem, akik meglátogattak a kórházban és bocsánatot kértek tőlem. Szó sincs róla, hogy azért vertek volna meg, mert szerb vagyok. Ezt kijelentettem Rasim Ljajić kisebbségügyi miniszternek is, amikor meglátogatott. Sokan nem is tudják, milyen nagy baj lehetett volna a történtekből. Petrovic hozzátette: túl szigorúan ítéletet hoztak esetükben. A tárgyalás során azt gondolta, legfeljebb 5-7 évet kapnak. A férfi számos helyen elmondta: nem igaz, hogy “nem tűri a magyarokat”. Mint megjegyezte öt temerini magyar lánynak udvarolt valamikor, és egy férjezett asszonynak is, amiért már kétszer is megverték.

Petrović jóhiszemű, intelligens fiatalembernek tartja magát, akitől távol áll minden erőszak. Zenekarokban játszott, mint dobos, sokszor járt külföldön. A Svat című bulvárjellegű havilap megírta, Zoran már jó tíz éve a heroin és az alkohol rabja, eddig négyszer volt elvonókúrán, és Hepatitis C betegsége van . A portré megfestése során arról sem feledkezhetünk meg, hogy Petrovic tagja volt a Vajdasági Szociáldemokrata Ligának. Részt vett a Milošević elleni, 2000. október 5-ei tüntetésekben Újvidék főterén. Hozzátette: akkor hagyta el pártját, amikor még részvéttáviratot sem küldtek neki. A temerini rendőrfőkapitány az áldozat kilétét megismerve a fiúk szüleinek csak ennyit mondott: “Miért éppen őt kellett megverni?”

Mire adnak Szerbiában 10-15 évet?

Az eset nyilvánvalóan nem nemzeti alapon történt, de a szerb politika nemzeti alapon büntetett. Sorozatgyilkosokat sem sújtanak ekkora büntetéssel.

-A boszniai szerb Biljana Plavsics háborús bűnök elkövetése miatt kapott tíz évet.

-A Legija (légiós) ragadványnéven ismert Milorad Ulemek egykori vörössapkás parancsnokot (későbbi bérgyilkost, aki bűnösnek találtatott Zoran Djindjics egykori miniszterelnök meggyilkolásában is) négyszeres gyilkosságért ítélték el tizenöt évre.

-Egy újvidéki sorozatgyilkost szintén tíz évre büntettek.

Dr. Bozóki Antal újvidéki ügyvéd nem vett részt a fiúk védelmében, de a szerb jogrendet ismerő szakértőként elmondta, az eset több érdekes kérdést vet fel. Például, hogy az újvidéki bíróság miért úgy értékelte és tárgyalta az ügyet, mint gyilkossági kísérletet. Hasonló esetekben súlyos testi sértés szokott lenni a vád. Ám ez az elsőfokú ítélet még így is megdöbbentő, ha gyilkossági kísérlet a vád, akkor sem reális a fejenként tíz-tizenöt év fegyház.

A szerb sajtó már a vádemelés pillanatától kezdve a közvéleményt a fiúk ellen hangolta, s ebben annyira sikeres volt, hogy még a délvidéki magyar pártok is, egészen a részletek megismeréséig óvatosan fogalmaztak, nem siettek az ítélet súlyosságát megkérdőjelezni.

Az eset óta három év telt el. Petrovicról csak itt-ott hallani, mint aki megtette kötelességét, elengedték. A “jóhiszemű, intelligens fiatalember” akitől “távol áll minden erőszak” néhány éve késsel próbált alkoholt rabolni egy élelmiszerboltból, amiért rövid időre börtönbe került. Kevés időt töltött szabadlábon, nem sokkal szabadulása után újfent erőszakos rablásért került fegyházba.

They Sent Me to Distant Lands to Fight Against Muslims ... Then I Became One

.Along the way, I ate Burger King in Peshawar, developed a debilitating drug habit and caught a 3-year prison sentence.

Mike's attraction to Islam dates to 2001, when his Afghan interpreter gave him a Quran. Mike had a deep respect for the spirit of those he fought and wanted to better understand what it was about their belief system that roused such a fierce dedication to their cause.

Last month, after a year of one-on-one study with Imam Sabur, Mike made his shihada at the Kemble Street Mosque in Utica, N.Y. He is now officially an adherent of Islam.

As a practicing Muslim, his life has become a virtual prayer. Five times a day, he ritualistically washes his body and kneels to pray facing the Kaaba in Mecca. (The first time, he used a compass and marked the direction with tape on his floor.)

"Islam," the imam explained to me, "is a way of life more than a religion. It teaches you how to do everything, and everything becomes an act of worship."

Mike agrees, allowing with some amusement that the structure is both reassuring and familiar for a soldier, "but the military isn't nearly as strict as Islam."

Every day, he downloads the prayer schedule off the mosque Web site. Prayers are timed according to the hours of sunrise and sunset, and on some winter mornings, that means getting up at 4:30.

But Mike rarely sleeps more than a few hours anyway. He has found that the exhaustion produced by long hours of concentrated work seems to keep his night terrors under control, so he "practices avoidance," letting his schoolwork regularly keep him up well past midnight.

Mike has a 4.0 grade-point average at State University of New York, and plans to get a Ph.D. in trauma research and counseling when he graduates.

He is also a convicted felon who suffers from a terrible post-traumatic stress injury.

If Uncle Sam were to use his finger like a Ouija board pointer searching out a U.S. Army poster boy, it just might stop on Mike.

He's tall, fair-haired, handsome, stands with a posture that suggests military training, but without rigidity, and he speaks with a polite confidence, intelligence and insight that made him a natural leader when he was in the service and makes him a campus and community leader now.

Mike was with the first wave of Americans into Afghanistan in 2001, and then, 15 months later, with the first wave into Iraq. Like so many combat veterans, he quite enjoys talking about the funny-crazy memories he brought home.

Like when someone discovered that there was a Burger King in Peshawar, Pakistan, over the border with Afghanistan.

If there wasn't a lot of traffic in the Khyber Pass, he and his unit could make the trip from Jalalabad in half an hour. Like schoolboys playing chicken, they'd go – 12 guys in three vehicles bristling with guns.

"We would just run in and grab our burgers, scarf them down, and get back out of Pakistan. If we would have run into somebody, we would have been massacred," he admits sheepishly. "But it was so good to have a Whopper."

But he won't go near the bad stuff that happened. He has learned that indulging someone else's curiosity predictably brings on terrible dreams.

"My body," he says with painful understatement, "blows everything out of proportion."

The imam has helped.

"There is just something about Imam Sabur," Mike says. "He has taught me to trust him."

It probably helps that the imam is a veteran and recently retired after a 20-year career at New York State's Department of Corrections.

"He knows that nothing he might say is going to shock me," Sabur told me. "I just listen and remind him that he may have done wrong in the past, and he surely will make mistakes in the future, but God is perfect, the rest of us aren't."

Mike enlisted in the Army in 1998. His first semester in college hadn't gone all that well, and he had a bunch of uncles who had told him the military would grow him up and give him a little discipline.

They were all Army or Marine veterans, and they told stories about exploits, adventures and camaraderie, all punctuated with: "and then we got drunk." They made it sound better than college. But none of his uncles had ever been to war.

After his first tour, Mike would have said his uncles were right. He was stationed in Korea and Bosnia, visited 27 other countries, went to jump school, and while he learned that he hated parachuting, he got a pretty badge for his uniform. He also got awards and affirmations, he made E-5 in 2 1/2, and he says he enjoyed every minute.

A month after his contract was up, the Twin Towers went down and he re-enlisted.

Mike wanted to be a Special Forces medic, but instead they made him a civil affairs specialist, which turned out to be "nothing but glorified social work."

His job was to do needs assessments in local villages, consulting with village elders about where schools, clinics and hospitals needed to be built, and organizing their construction.

"I was the one who would go in, smiling and happy: ‘Look, we can get you guys schools.' "

But he was not immune to the irony of living in an old royal palace in Jalalabad, which he says was "very nice before we blew it up," or in Fallujah, before "the Marines came through and blew that up," and then making a show of gifting the locals with replacements for what the Americans had destroyed.

"They didn't like us as much after we blew things up," he told me with a wry smile. "We had to do a lot more building to make the Army look good."

Civil affairs, however, was not what Mike had re-upped for. He wanted retribution, and he "wanted to do the fun stuff -- kick in doors and fight war."

So he doubled as an 18 Bravo weapons specialist, joining a team that was doing the actual fighting. But only at night. If he went out with them in the daylight, where his face and his patches could be recognized, it would be much harder to "come back the next day and try to put a smile on 'em."

But as it turned out, he couldn't do the fun stuff with impunity. About four months into his first tour, he started having intolerable nightmares.

The unit medic gave him Valium, telling him, "If you're not sleeping, we can't use you."

He started out taking one a night, but after a month he was taking three or four just to get to sleep.

And drinking heavily as well. They all did, in part for the artificial courage, but also because alcohol was an excuse for these warriors to share their horror.

"We'd do a drug house or something, and whatever happened, when we came back, before we cleaned our weapons or anything, somebody would have a bottle of liquor, and we would talk everything through.

"This is among a bunch of guys that normally, if you're sober, aren't prone to expressing their feelings easily, especially with other men."

It was when he got to Iraq that he started doing heavy drugs.

"With American money, you can walk into any pharmacy, and they will give you what you want. I had someone write Oxycontin and Valium on a piece of paper in Arabic, but after the first few times, they just knew me."

Of course, he came home addicted to the drugs and dependent on the alcohol. The Army sent him to its Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program when he came home.

He sat there for eight weeks in bored, defiant silence, celebrated his graduation with a 12-pack and took his "honorable discharge with a bar to re-enlistment due to medical reasons" pretty much straight to jail.

With one painful detour: an attempted suicide. He took all the meds the VA had given him and anything else he could get his hands on.
"They didn't kill me," he told me matter-of-factly, "so I just kept on drinking and getting heavier into drugs."

Mike got himself a generous one- to three-year bid in state prison for possession -- generous because even though he was holding a lot of illegal substances when he was arrested, the sentencing judge took his PTSD diagnosis into consideration.

After he sobered up, he spent his time in prison reading the Quran, and he began attending services. When he got out, he made a beeline for the Kemble Street Mosque and asked for the imam.

Although the spiritual leader has become his primary mentor and support, Mike also has a counselor at SUNY and another at the VA. When he first got out of the Army, he thought he could handle things on his own.

"I went downhill real fast," he recalls, "and it didn't come out good. If that happens again," he told me earnestly, "I need somebody right there, and I don't know if the imam could handle everything that would happen."

Another breakdown might cost him his Ph.D. He knows that as a convicted felon, he will have to go "an extra 10 steps to get there."
When he applied for transfer to a four-year college, some of his interviews were more like interrogations. He had to provide convincing answers to questions such as, "What makes you think you're not going to backslide?"

And when one of his classmates opined that felons are a waste of social service resources because they will never change, Mike just got up and left the classroom. But he came back -- he was "too scared about not getting A's" to make an issue of the slight.

But "felon" isn't the only label Mike carries -- he is also a veteran. Although veterans may appear to be the flavor of the week in many circles, the caricature of the troubled, addicted, angry misfit is often close beneath the surface. Faculty and students alike often slip into blaming soldiers for the policies of the government and military.

Steve Darman, who teaches sociology at SUNY and is at the epicenter of activism on behalf of Oneida County's veterans, says that "professors and students who make facile remarks about the wars and how misguided and/or stupid they are really piss these guys off -- and not necessarily because they are pro-war."

Pro or con, right or wrong, our veterans have learned something about what war is really like, what it really does to people, something that those of us who have never been might find useful if we're serious about pushing back against our nation's militaristic policies and institutions.

Comparing the surprise attack of Pearl Harbor with that of the Twin Towers, Michael Hayden, who in 2001 was director of the National Security Agency, said, "perhaps it was more of a failure of imagination than last time."

Certainly, the vast majority of Americans failed to imagine what the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq would really cost. Author Robert Lifton has said that the task of our times to "imagine the real."

Our veterans might be able to help with that, if we are willing to listen. Having been in both wars, Mike is convinced that, "we will never win either, because Muslims have more fighting spirit than any Americans."

GÁZA ÉS A GÁZ

Az elemzéssel nem célunk állást fogalni semelyik oldal meggyőződése mellett, nem szeretnénk világnézeti és napi politikai csatározásokba belefolyni. Pusztán érdekes összecsengés tapasztalható a gáz és a gázai történések között - már megint az energia áll hátul... (ffek)

Michel Chossudovsky, a University of Ottawa közgazdászprofesszora, a Centre for Research on Globalization független kutatócsoport egyik vezetője szerint a Gázai-övezet izraeli megszállása közvetlen összefüggésben áll a stratégiai gázkészletek kérdésével.

2000-ben a Gázai-övezethez tartozó partszakasztól nem messze jelentős gázkészleteket fedeztek fel. A palesztínokkal kötött 1999-es szerződés alapján az olaj- és gázlelőhelyek feltárásának joga 25 évig a British Gas-t (BG) és az athéni székhelyű Consolidated Contractors International Company-t illeti meg (CCC). A BG 2000-ben csak két fúrást végzett, összesen 1400 md m3 készletet találtak, ennek értéke kb. 4 md $. A gázmezőkhöz kapcsolódó jogok 60%-ban a BG-t, 30%-ban a CCC-t, 10%-ban Palesztína befektetési alapját illetik meg. A Gázai-övezet környékén feltárt tengeri lelőhelyek 60%-a jogilag a palesztínoké.

Izrael kezdettől fogva arra törekedett, hogy (1) a palesztinokat kikapcsolja az üzletből, (2) a kitermelt gáz hozzá és ne Egyiptomba kerüljön, (3) üzletet is csináljon. A legfontosabb cél természetesen az 1999-es szerződés érvénytelenítése volt. 2007-ben olyan szerződést akartak kötni a BG-zel, hogy a gázt tengeralatti csővezetéken szállítsák Izraelbe. A gázt formálisan a palesztinoktól vásárolták volna meg, igaz, csak természetben voltak hajlandóak fizetni, hiszen a Hamasz-kormány szerintünk nem kaphat pénzt, mert azt a terrorizmus támogatására fordítaná. A BG 2007 decemberében felhagyott a tárgyalásokkal, 2008 januárjában becsukta izraeli irodáit. A 2008 legvégén megkezdett hadműveleteket már júniusban elkezdték tervezni. Októberben ennek tudatában kezdték újra a tárgyalásokat a BG-zel. A Gázai-övezet megszállásának távlati geopolitikai célja, hogy partmenti vizek és a palesztin gázlelőhelyek izraeli tulajdonba menjenek át. Akkor a meglévő szomszédos létesítményekkel egyetlen rendszerbe lehetne őket szervezni. Délről gáz, északról olaj érkezhetne Izraelbe (a Baku-Tbiliszi-Ceyhan csővezeték végállomásáról). Az olajvezeték láthatólag döntő hatással lehet a Libanonnal fennálló kapcsolatokra.

Izrael 2000 óta zajló tengeri elrettentő akciói sem egyszerűen a palesztin halászok ellen irányultak.
A Gázai-övezetben körülbelül 3000 halász tevékenykedik a partmenti vizeken. Az Arafat és Rabin által aláírt, 1994. május 4-én kelt Gáza-Jerikó egyezmény 20 tengeri mérföldben jelölte meg ennek a partmenti sávnak a szélességét, melyet északról izraeli, dél felől egyiptomi vizek határolnak. Az egyezmény egy keskeny partmenti csíktól eltekintve mindenféle halászati és gazdasági tevékenységet engedélyezett. A palesztínok ezután hat éven át zavartalanul halásztak. 2000-től az izraeli hadsereg rendszeresen fenyegetni és zaklatni kezdte a 6 mérföldnél beljebb dolgozó halászhajókat. Hogy miért, azt nem közölte a palesztínokkal. A kimondatlan határvonalat a fegyverek jelölték ki. Arafat 2000 szeptember 27-én behajózott a parttól 19 mérföldnyire, hogy személyesen gyújtsa meg az első adag kitermelt gázt. Egy izraeli olajtársaság ugyan vitatta a palesztínok tulajdonjogát, de a keresetet az izraeli bíróság elutasította.
Kérdés, kit illet a gáz tulajdonjoga. A fentiek szerint (Gáza-Jerikó egyezmény) ugyebár a palesztinokat, nyilván azért is szerződtek az angolok 1999-ben Arafattal. A lelőhely 10-15 mérföldnyire esik a parttól. Úgy számították, a gázból egy évtizedig egész Palesztína áramellátását biztosíthatják, és még exportra is jut belőle. 2000. szeptember 28-án Ariel Sharon provokatív látogatást tett a Templom-hegyre. Ebből felkelés robbant ki. A 6 mérföldes határon megkezdődtek az izraeli járőrhajók máig tartó támadásai a halászhajók ellen. Sharont 2001 februárjában miniszterelnökké választották.
2002-ben a Sharon kérésére Palesztínába érkezett az ENSZ-főtitkár emberi jogi követe, Catherine Bertini, aki a jelentéséhez fűzött mellékletben rögzítette, hogy a halászati zóna szélessége 12(!) tengeri mérföld, amit be kell tartani. A helyzet ettől persze semmit sem változott. A katonai fenyegetéssel évek óta szűkebb területre kényszerített halászhajók miatt a partmenti sáv halállománya, s így a zsákmány is erősen megcsappant. 2005-ben Izrael kivonult ugyan a Gázai-övezetből, de a szárazföldi átkelőpontok és tengeri útvonalak ellenőrzésével bezárta a palesztínokat. A Hamasz hatalomra jutása után még szigorúbban korlátozta (és korlátozza) a termékek, nyersanyagok, gyógyszerek és emberek forgalmát. Míg 2000 előtt napi 900 teherautó ellátmány érkezett a területre, ezután csak 70 (2008 júniusában, a rakétatámadások beszüntetése fejében ezt a számot 90-re emelték). Végül: 2008. november 18-án olyan egyiptomi bírósági ítélet született, mely a kormányt az Izraelbe irányuló földgázszállítás leállítására kötelezte, a hiányzó parlament jóváhagyás miatt. Egy 2005-ös megállapodás szerint ugyanis Egyiptom 15 év alatt 1,7 md m3 gázt ad el Izraelnek. A szállítás ténylegesen csak 2008 májusában indult meg. Az ítélet nem jogerős, fellebbeztek, de a csapok potenciális elzárása is nyugtalaníthatta Izraelt.
A BG Group érdekérvényesítő ereje az általa képviselt nagy piaci értékű tudásra, információra és a technológiára épül. Izrael önmagában nem tud fúrni a BG koncessziós területén, legfeljebb lyukakat a tengerfenékbe. A BG rengeteg 3D szeizmikus adat ismeretében és kellő szaktudás birtokában megtervezte és kivitelezte a kutat. Nélküle vagy az ő érdekei jelentős sérelmére nem lehet ezt a mezőt kitermelni. A BG nem fogja elengedni el ezt a csontot. Az igazgatótanácsban ott van pl. Sir David Manning, aki régi motoros, legutóbb Nagy-Britannia USA nagykövete volt, s egyben a Lockheed és a Lloyds igazgatótanácsának is tagja.
Egy politikailag ennyire exponált (és beágyazott) cég, mint a BG, maga nyíltan nem mehet szembe a nemzetközi szerződésekkel. De... ha történetesen úgy alakul, hogy azokat valamiért teljesen újratárgyalják és végül mégis Izraellel köthet üzletet (aminek eddig útjában állt a Hamasz-Izrael konfliktus), akkor persze újabb nagy fejlesztésekhez juthatna hozzá. És nem tiltakozna. A csattanó: az Isramco 2009. január 18-án jelentette be, hogy a Tamar-1 fúróállomás igen jelentős földgázkészletekre bukkant Haifától 90 km-re keletre a tengeren.

Ez minden eddigi gázmezőnél nagyobb, értéke kb. 15 milliárd $. A fúrás minden idők legköltségesebb izraeli vállalkozása volt, 144 millió dollárba került. Az előzetes becslések szerint 35% volt az esélye, hogy 87 md m3 gázt találjanak.
A fúróállomásban a fúrást végző amerikai Noble Energy 36%-kal, az Isramco 29%-kal részesedik, a fennmaradó rész a Delek Drillingé és az Avner Oil and Gas Explorationé. A tengerfenék 1700 méteren van, onnan még 1400 m vastag sóréteget kell keresztülfúrni. A telepített fúrótorony 5000 m-ig tud lehatolni, 4900 m-nél érte el a megfelelő réteget. A bejelentést követően Tel Avivban emelkedni kezdtek a részvények árfolyamai. Isramco +123%, Delek Group +57%, Avner +45%.
A hadsereg ezzel egyidőben kivonult Gázából.

10 Terms Not to Use with Muslims

Here is advice given to me from Muslim friends worldwide regarding words and concepts that are not useful in building relationships with them.

Arlington, Va. - In the course of my travels -- from the Middle East to Central Asia to Southeast Asia -- it has been my great privilege to meet and become friends with many devout Muslims. These friendships are defined by frank respect as we listen to each other; understand and agree on the what, why, and how of our disagreements, political and theological; and, most of all, deepen our points of commonality as a result.

I have learned much from my Muslim friends, foremost this: Political disagreements come and go, but genuine respect for each other, rooted in our respective faith traditions, does not. If there is no respect, there is no relationship, merely a transactional encounter that serves no one in the long term.

As President Obama considers his first speech in a Muslim majority country (he visits Turkey April 6-7), and as the US national security establishment reviews its foreign policy and public diplomacy, I want to share the advice given to me from dear Muslim friends worldwide regarding words and concepts that are not useful in building relationships with them. Obviously, we are not going to throw out all of these terms, nor should we. But we do need to be very careful about how we use them, and in what context.

1. "The Clash of Civilizations." Invariably, this kind of discussion ends up with us as the good guy and them as the bad guy. There is no clash of civilizations, only a clash between those who are for civilization, and those who are against it. Civilization has many characteristics but two are foundational: 1) It has no place for those who encourage, invite, and/or commit the murder of innocent civilians; and 2) It is defined by institutions that protect and promote both the minority and the transparent rule of law.

2. "Secular." The Muslim ear tends to hear "godless" with the pronunciation of this word. And a godless society is simply inconceivable to the vast majority of Muslims worldwide. Pluralism -- which encourages those with (and those without) a God-based worldview to have a welcomed and equal place in the public square -- is a much better word.

3. "Assimilation." This word suggests that the minority Muslim groups in North America and Europe need to look like the majority, Christian culture. Integration, on the other hand, suggests that all views, majority and minority, deserve equal respect as long as each is willing to be civil with one another amid the public square of a shared society.

4. "Reformation." Muslims know quite well, and have an opinion about, the battle taking place within Islam and what it means to be an orthodox and devout Muslim. They don't need to be insulted by suggesting they follow the Christian example of Martin Luther. Instead, ask how Muslims understand ijtihad, or reinterpretation, within their faith traditions and cultural communities.

5. "Jihadi." The jihad is an internal struggle first, a process of improving one's spiritual self-discipline and getting closer to God. The lesser jihad is external, validating "just war" when necessary. By calling the groups we are fighting "jihadis," we confirm their own – and the worldwide Muslim public's -- perception that they are religious. They are not. They are terrorists, hirabists, who consistently violate the most fundamental teachings of the Holy Koran and mainstream Islamic scholars and imams.

6. "Moderate." This ubiquitous term is meant politically but can be received theologically. If someone called me a "moderate Christian," I would be deeply offended. I believe in an Absolute who also commands me to love my neighbor. Similarly, it is not an oxymoron to be a mainstream Muslim who believes in an Absolute. A robust and civil pluralism must make room for the devout of all faiths, and none.

7. "Interfaith." This term conjures up images of watered-down, lowest common denominator statements that avoid the tough issues and are consequently irrelevant. "Multifaith" suggests that we name our deep and irreconcilable theological differences in order to work across them for practical effect -- according to the very best of our faith traditions, much of which are values we share.

8. "Freedom." Unfortunately, "freedom," as expressed in American foreign policy, does not always seek to engage how the local community and culture understands it. Absent such an understanding, freedom can imply an unbound licentiousness. The balance between the freedom to something (liberty) and the freedom from something (security) is best understood in a conversation with the local context and, in particular, with the Muslims who live there. "Freedom" is best framed in the context of how they understand such things as peace, justice, honor, mercy, and compassion.

9. "Religious Freedom." Sadly, this term too often conveys the perception that American foreign policy is only worried about the freedom of Protestant evangelicals to proselytize and convert, disrupting the local culture and indigenous Christians. Although not true, I have found it better to define religious freedom as the promotion of respect and reconciliation with the other at the intersection of culture and the rule of law -- sensitive to the former and consistent with the latter.

10. "Tolerance." Tolerance is not enough. Allowing for someone's existence, or behavior, doesn't build the necessary relationships of trust -- across faiths and cultures -- needed to tackle the complex and global challenges that our civilization faces. We need to be honest with and respect one another enough to name our differences and commonalities, according to the inherent dignity we each have as fellow creations of God called to walk together in peace and justice, mercy and compassion.

The above words and phrases will differ and change over the years, according to the cultural and ethnic context, and the (mis)perceptions that Muslims and non-Muslims have of one another. While that is to be expected, what counts most is the idea that we are earnestly trying to listen to and understand each other better; demonstrating respect as a result.

Military 'Researchers' Strapped Pigs in Body Armor and Blew Them Up, All in the Name of Science

The 'study' was conducted last year in an undisclosed location, with the supposed goal of linking bomb blasts and brain injuries.

As long as we're discussing the military budget, let's talk about this: Pentagon researchers spent nearly $10 million dollars last year strapping pigs in body armor and blowing them up.

No, really; USA Today reports:

"During an 11-month period of research ending in December, scientists wrapped pigs in body armor and placed them in a Humvee simulator, in open fields and in a closed room and subjected them to varying degrees of explosions at a research laboratory in a location researchers declined to disclose."

The explosions "ranged in intensity," according to military researchers, "wounding some of the pigs and killing others."

The point? To "study the link between roadside bomb blasts and brain injury." Roadside bombs, after all, are the "top killer of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Senseless pig killing aside, there's a perverse irony to this story, which is that the Pentagon only recently acknowledged that, as USA Today reports, "up to 360,000 veterans ... may have suffered brain injuries" known as "blast-induced neurotraumas." Until last month, the Department of Defense was too busy claiming all those soldiers were merely suffering from "mild concussions," or entirely imaginary ailments, as AlterNet contributor Nora Eisenberg wrote a few weeks back. So it comes as a bit of a surprise that military scientists spent the better part of last year trying to understand blast-induced brain injuries at all.

So what were their conclusions? Well, for one thing, "body armor does not worsen brain injury," researchers found, a statement that would seem to be masquerading as common sense were it not for the military's apparent concern that armor might "deflect the force of blasts towards the head." (It doesn’t.) Not surprisingly, pigs without body armor "died from blasts within 24 to 48 hours, while those with armor survived 'significantly higher blasts,'" according to Jan Walker, a spokeswoman for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, which conducted the study.

A visit to the DARPA website -- Powered by Ideas! -- makes no mention of its exploding pig research; the news page instead features its work on "game-changing cyber-innovation" and "next-generation academics" and other tech-genius sounding protjects. But Col. Geoffrey Ling, who led the ~~slaughter~~ research, defends its value, telling USA Today that "pigs are good subjects because their brains are more similar to human brains than those of rats.” (Which is confusing, given that rats were also used as exploding test subjects.)

Anyway, according to Walker, the Department of Defense "complied with policies that ensure that a minimal number of animals were used in the testing and that they were treated humanely at all times."

That is of course until they strapped the swine in body armor (or not) and blew them up, causing them to suffer bloody injuries or slow agonizing deaths -- all on taxpayers' dime!

Animal rights activists, who have long decried the cruel use of pigs in military experiments, are understandably critical of this latest round of violent animal testing. Martin Stephens, vice president for animal research issues at the U.S. Humane Society called on the Pentagon to stop its research on pigs, asking,"Is this the best they can do after several years of losing soldiers to roadside bombs?"

Apparently it is, according to the military. A fresh round of testing will begin later this year.

The Air Force Experiments

PETA has obtained sickening video footage of another series of Taser experiments, which were funded by the Pentagon's Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate (JNLWD) through the Department of Defense (DoD). The JNLWD commissioned the Air Force Research Laboratory to "evaluate the behavioral effectiveness" of Taser's products at Brooks Air Force Base in Texas.

Here are the chilling details of one Taser experiment on 11 pigs:

Each pig was initially exposed to the output of one of five randomly selected TASER-like devices for 15 seconds. There was a minimum rest period of 45 hours between succeeding exposures .... The initial exposures were accomplished while the pigs were pressing a panel for a food reward. After the second exposure, independent of the devices they were exposed to, the pigs refused to approach the bar and food well. Therefore, the test chamber was reconfigured; the panel press apparatus and food well were replaced with a bowl that contained food. After the third exposure, the pigs refused to approach the food bowl and vigorously resisted entering the test chamber.

Secret Report Reveals Role of Medical Personnel in Torture at CIA Black Sites

Medical professionals working for the CIA played a central role in the "ill-treatment" of terror suspects in U.S. custody overseas, according to a previously confidential report by the International Committee of the Red Cross. The 2007 report describes interviews with 14 "high value detainees" who were transferred to Guantanamo Bay in September 2006, revealing the full extent of complicity and participation by medical personnel in a wide and grisly range of torture methods inflicted upon them. Listed in the table of contents of the 41-page report, these methods included "suffocation by water," "prolonged stress standing," "beatings by use of a collar," "beating and kicking," "confinement in a box," "prolonged nudity," and more.

The ICRC report describes "three principal roles" played by medical professionals in the torture of prisoners in U.S. custody. "Firstly, there was a direct role in monitoring the ongoing ill-treatment which, in some instances, involved the health personnel directly participating while certain methods were used."

Secondly, there was a role in performing a medical check just prior to, and just after,each transfer. Finally, there was the provision of healthcare, to treat both the direct consequences of ill-treatment detailed in previous sections, and to treat any natural ailments that arose during the prolonged periods of detention.

According to the report, which was obtained by journalist Mark Danner -- who first published excerpts last month and has now published its full contents on the website of the New York Review of Books -- certain methods required more active participation by medical professions. For example, in subjecting prisoners to "suffocation by water," "it was alleged that health personnel actively monitored a detainee's oxygen saturation using what, from the description of the detainee of a device placed over the finger, appeared to be a pulse oxymeter."

"Mr. Khaled Shaik Mohammed alleged that on several occasions the suffocation method was stopped on the intervention of a health person who was present in the room each time this procedure was used."

KSM, one of the few prisoners who the U.S. government has actually acknowledged having waterboarding, described his experience to ICRC staff.

I would be strapped to a special bed, which can be rotated into a vertical position. A cloth would be placed over my face. Water was then poured onto the cloth by one of the guards so that I could not breathe. This obviously could only be done for one or two minutes at a time. The cloth was then removed and the bed was put into a vertical position. The whole process was then repeated during about 1 hour.

Abu Zubaydah, whose torture has also been widely documented, described it as follows:

I was put on what looked like a hospital bed, and strapped down very tightly with belts. A black cloth was then placed over my face and the interrogators used a mineral water bottle to pour water on the cloth so that I could not breathe. After a few minutes the cloth was removed and the bed was rotated into an upright position. The pressure of the straps on my wounds caused severe pain. I vomited. The bed was then again lowered to a horizontal position and the same torture carried out with the black cloth over my face and water poured on from a bottle. On this occasion my head was in a more backward, downwards position and the water was poured on for a longer time. I struggled without success to breathe. I thought I was going to die. I lost control of my urine. Since then I still lose control of my urine when under stress.

The conclusion by the ICRC was that the interrogation of prisoners at U.S. "black sites" certainly "constituted torture." But additionally, "the alleged participation of health personnel in the interrogation process and, either directly or indirectly, in the infliction of ill-treatment constituted a gross breach of medical ethics and, in some cases, amounted to participation in torture and/or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment."

Indeed, the presence of medical professionals seemed itself to augment the psychological torture. "One detainee,who did not wish his name to be transmitted to the authorities, alleged that a health person threatened that medical care would be conditional upon cooperation with the interrogators." Another recalled being told: "I look after your body only because we need you for information."

The extent of Israel's brutality against Palestinian civilians in its 22-day pounding of the Gaza Strip is gradually surfacing. Israeli soldiers are testifying to lax rules of engagement tantamount to a license to kill. One soldier commented: "That's what is so nice, supposedly, about Gaza: You see a person on a road, walking along a path. He doesn't have to be with a weapon, you don't have to identify him with anything and you can just shoot him."

What is less appreciated is how Israel is also brutalizing international law, in ways that may long outlast the demolition of Gaza.

Since 2001, Israeli military lawyers have pushed to reclassify military operations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip from the law enforcement model mandated by the law of occupation to one of armed conflict. Under the former, soldiers of an occupying army must arrest, rather than kill, opponents, and generally must use the minimum force necessary to quell disturbances.

While in armed conflict, a military is still constrained by the laws of war -- including the duty to distinguish between combatants and civilians, and the duty to avoid attacks causing disproportionate harm to civilian persons or objects -- the standard permits far greater uses of force.

Israel pressed the shift to justify its assassinations of Palestinians in the occupied territories, which clearly violated settled international law. Israel had practiced "targeted killings" since the 1970s -- always denying that it did so -- but had recently stepped up their frequency, by spectacular means (such as air strikes) that rendered denial futile.

Former US President Bill Clinton charged the 2001 Mitchell Committee with investigating the causes of the second Palestinian uprising and recommending how to restore calm in the region. Israeli lawyers pleaded their case to the committee for armed conflict. The committee responded by criticizing the blanket application of the model to the uprising, but did not repudiate it altogether.

Today, most observers -- including Amnesty International -- tacitly accept Israel's framing of the conflict in Gaza as an armed conflict, as their criticism of Israel's actions in terms of the duties of distinction and the principle of proportionality betrays. This shift, if accepted, would encourage occupiers to follow Israel's lead, externalizing military control while shedding all responsibilities to occupied populations.

Israel's campaign to rewrite international law to its advantage is deliberate and knowing. As the former head of Israel's 20-lawyer International Law Division in the Military Advocate General's office, Daniel Reisner, recently stated: "If you do something for long enough, the world will accept it. The whole of international law is now based on the notion that an act that is forbidden today becomes permissible if executed by enough countries ... International law progresses through violations. We invented the targeted assassination thesis and we had to push it. At first there were protrusions that made it hard to insert easily into the legal molds. Eight years later, it is in the center of the bounds of legitimacy."

In the Gaza fighting, Israel has again tried to transform international law through violations. For example, its military lawyers authorized the bombing of a police cadet graduation ceremony, killing at least 63 young Palestinian men. Under international law, such deliberate killings of civilian police are war crimes. Yet Israel treats all employees of the Hamas-led government in the Gaza Strip as terrorists, and thus combatants. Secretaries, court clerks, housing officials, judges -- all were, in Israeli eyes, legitimate targets for liquidation.

Israeli jurists also instructed military commanders that any Palestinian who failed to evacuate a building or area after warnings of an impending bombardment was a "voluntary human shield" and thus a participant in combat, subject to lawful attack. One method of warning employed by Israeli gunners, dubbed "knocking on the roof," was to fire first at a building's corner, then, a few minutes later, to strike more structurally vulnerable points. To imagine that Gazan civilians -- penned into the tiny Gaza Strip by Israeli troops, and surrounded by the chaos of battle -- understood this signal is fanciful at best.

Israel has a lengthy history of unpunished abuses of international law -- among the most flagrant its decades-long colonization of the West Bank. To its credit, much of the world has refused to ratify Israel's violations. Unfortunately, our government is an exception, having frequently provided diplomatic cover for Israel's abuses. Our diplomats have vetoed 42 UN Security Council resolutions to shelter Israel from the consequences of its often illegal behavior.

We must break that habit now, or see international law perverted in ways that can harm us all. Our government has already been seduced to follow, in Afghanistan and elsewhere, Israel's example of targeted killings. This policy alienates civilians, innocently killed and wounded in these crude strikes, and deepens the determination of enemies to harm us by any means possible.

We do not want civilian police in the United States to be bombed, nor to have anyone "knock on our roofs." For our own sakes and for the world's, Israel's impunity must end.

Felhívás a Hamasz Európai terrorszervezetek listájáról való törlésére

A 2009 júniusi európai parlamenti választások alkalmából egy sürgős felszólítást intézünk mind a 736 parlamenti szék jelöltjéhez.
Arra kérjük őket, hogy vonják vissza minden feltétel nélkül a Hamasz, és az összes palesztin felszabadító szervezetet az európai terrorszervezetek listájáról.
Felszólítjuk az Európai Uniót, hogy ismerje el a palesztin nép önrendelkezési jogát. Ez magában foglalja a Hamasz, mint jogos nemzeti felszabadító mozgalom elismerését.

Appeal remove Hamas from EU Terror list launched

In this commemoration of the Land Day, symbol of the Palestinian resistance, the call for the withdrawal of Hamas fom the European list of the terrorist organizations, launched on February 1st, 2009 in Brussels, received the support of 1 200 signatories. Among them, 275 personalities of the academic, literary, artistic and militant of the Palestinian cause fields. The signatories emanate from 22 of 27 countries of the European Union and from 40 countries outside the European Union, representing all the continents.

The call is sent to the candidates for the election of the European Parliament which will be held on June 7th, 2009. Very known personalities in the European arena, as Jose Saramago and Mairead Maguire, Nobel prize, Henri Alleg and his wife Gilberte, Francois Houtart, Tariq Ramadan, Gilad Atzmon, Yvonne Ridley, Domenico Losurdo, Giulietto Chiesa, Norman Finkelstein, James Petras, Christine Delphy, Dyab Abou Jahjah, Daniel Bensa"id, Tariq Ali, Virginia Tilley, Gretta Duisenberg have expressed their support to the initiative.

Till the European elections which are held on June 7th, 2009, the first goal of the www.recogniseresistance.net website is to go on collecting endorsements on a wide scale. It also allows the signatories to express their motivation and to consult articles dedicated to the Palestinian resistance.

The call will be officially communicated to the top candidates for the European elections at the beginning of May and their answers will be published on the website.

Felsorolni mindent szinte lehetetlen.
Mint tébolyult, se lát, se hall e hízelgéstől elvakult…
Már akkor milliárdokat lopott, mikor a sz.ros kommunista seggnyalói apró morzsákért marcangolták egymást. A sz..ból hazudta össze nekik a 2006-os választást és a hatalmat. Mindent megtett a hatalomért: szlovák terroristákkal fenyegetőzött, szilvásyval kirámoltatta kádár sírját, annyi a kordon évek óta már az egész országban hogy lépni sem lehet, de most már a kordonok közt is hullaszag terjeng…utat nyit magának a szag a rácsokon is át…röpül….szálldoss

Az áldozó tűz parazsára zöld borókagallyat raktak. A táltos asszony füstöt lélegzet, a többiek meg rejtőztetőt dunnyogtak. Dobolni, furuglázni nem mertek, a határőrség miatt. A táltos asszony révületbe esvén átadta fejében lakó szelleme helyét az idézett SZELLEM-nek, hogy az az ő nyelvén szólalhasson. LÁPKUMÁNJA táltos SZELLEMÉT idézték, mert az idevalósi volt, a mi fajtánk. A táltos asszony először felszökött, de a többiek körbe vették őt, nehogy baj érje. Először csak hebegett, aztán szóval szólta a régi nagy táltos üzenetét...

Vasárnapra virradóra ismeretlen tettesek megrongálták a temerini tájház előtt álló, eredetileg még a 19. században állított római katolikus keresztet, sőt a bádogból készült Krisztus-corpust is megpróbálták letépni, ám ez valami miatt nem sikerült nekik. Ádám István, a VMDP községi képviselője feljelentést tett a rendőrségen, s ennek nyomán lefolytatták a helyszíni vizsgálatot.

Ez, akárcsak K. Csongor középiskolás két nappal korábbi bántalmazása is egy kb. tizenöt fős, szerbül beszélő csoport részéről, azt jelzi, hogy a kisebbségellenes indulatok ismét feléledőben vannak (vagy tán soha nem is lankadtak) Temerinben, de – mint a bezdáni magyar fiú két héttel ezelőtti brutális megverése jelzi – hasonló a helyzet Vajdaság más községeiben is.

Tomboló vadrácok

Újabb magyarellenes támadásról számoltak be Nádi Karolinának, az Emberi Jogi Központ munkatársának. A támadás tegnap (2009. március 27-én) este 11 óra körül történt Temerinben. Magyar fiatalok egy csoportja (5-6 fiú) a központban található pékségbe igyekezett, amikor egy körülbelül 15 fős társaság támadt rájuk.

A szerb nemzetiségű fiatalok először „csak” azt követelték, hogy Kosovával kapcsolatos szlogeneket skandáljanak (“Kosovo je Srbija” – “Kosovo Szerbia”). Mivel a magyar fiúk nem engedelmeskedtek, előkerültek a bokszerek és néhány sörösüveg.

Legsúlyosabb sérüléseket K.Cs., középiskolás fiú szenvedte el, akinek vágások keletkeztek a fején, a homloksérülését pedig ölteni is kellett. A fiú elmondása szerint a támadók egy részét felismerné, hiszen egy középiskolába járnak, a többi támadó idősebb volt náluk.

Az Emberi Jogi Központ – ismételten - a leghatározottabb intézkedésre szólítja fel a Magyar Koalíció vezetőségét - áll a sajtónyilatkozatban.

Persze ennek csak akkor van értelme, ha bevezetjük a hallgatólagos eskü fogalmát, ami abban állna, hogy ráutaló magatartásával az egyed kvázi elkötelezi magát az ő családja, osztálya, baráti köre, golfklubja, etnikuma, vércsoportja, eszmetársai, általánosabban bizonyos, a saját személyén kívül álló, de általa mégis fontosnak vélt dolgok, elvek vagy értékek mellett, aztán a valóságban ellenük dolgozik.

Ebből máris adódik számunkra egy fontos következtetés:
nem lehet áruló az az egyén, akiről köztudott, hogy számára a saját érdekein és a hatalom pőre akarásán kívül semmi se számít.

Besúgó persze válhat belőle, ha megfelelő helyen és időben születik, de áruló nem, mert az árulóvá váláshoz kell egy bizonyos erkölcsi minimum.

Magyarsága miatt támadták meg a szerbek - magyar gyalázás a Délvidékén

2009. március 17-én, kedden 7-8 szerb fiatal megtámadta Balog Eliot 16 éves bezdáni fiút, akinek súlyos sérüléseket okoztak. A támadás este hét óra körül történt a zombori buszállomáson.
A sértett édesanyja kérdésünkre elmondta, hogy fiát azok a 18 év körüli szerb fiatalok támadták meg, akik ugyanabba a műszaki középiskolába járnak, ahova Eliot. A támadást megelőző héten az egyik küllődi (Kolut) szerb fiú megkérdezte Eliottól, hogy „Jesi ti Mađar?” (Te magyar vagy?). Ő igennel válaszolt, majd megkérdezte, hogy miért kérdezik. Erre a szerb fiatalok csak annyit feleltek, hogy: „Dobro, dobro”. (Jól van, jól van). Néhány napra rá (március 16-án) Eliotot a szerb fiúk közül egyikük meglökte, amit ő hasonlóképpen viszonzott. Az incidens után a szerb fiatalok azt tanácsolták neki, hogy iratkozzon ki az iskolából, majd a következő szavakkal fenyegették meg: „Sutra si gotov”! (Holnap véged van!). Másnap a fenyegetés beváltásától tartva Eliot kollégája egy önvédelmi célokra használatos gázsprayt adott Eliotnak.
A támadók hátulról közelítettek, és amint a magyar fiú megfordult, egy boxerrel arcon ütötték, ennek következtében nekiesett egy üvegkirakatnak. Ezután még volt annyi ereje, hogy elszökjön támadóitól, akik azonban üldözőbe vették, de mire utolérték volna, sikerült elővennie az önvédelmi gázsprayt, amellyel lefújta a támadókat, de így is súlyos sérüléseket szenvedett, eltörött az orra és az arccsontja. A sértettet a sürgősségi betegellátó osztályra vitték, ahol az ügyeletes átvette, majd értesítette a rendőrséget. (Eliot sérülése műtétre szorult, amit 2009. március 24-én el is végeztek.)
Az édesanya azon felvetésére, hogy Eliotot magyarsága miatt támadták meg, a rendőrök azt válaszolták, hogy hagyják ezt a „nemzeti alapon történt támadás” mesét (az édesanya nem tudta pontosan felidézni a rendőrök szavait, de ez volt a lényege). A hozzátartozók arról is beszámoltak, hogy szinte mindennaposak a szerb diákok részéről a magyar diákok számlájára elhangzó sértések, negatív jelzők Zomborban, amit legtöbb esetben a magyar diákok elengednek a fülük mellett.
A helyzet tarthatatlanságára való tekintettel, felszólítjuk a Magyar Koalíció vezetőit, Pásztor Istvánt, Ágoston Andrást és Páll Sándort, hogy a leghatározottabban ítéljék el a történteket, illetve tegyék meg a szükséges intézkedéseket (személyi konzekvenciák kérdése) azon megnyilatkozásokkal kapcsolatban, amelyeket az MK képviseletében politikusok tettek a helyzet javulására vonatkozóan, miközben ma semmivel sem jobb a délvidéki magyarság helyzete. A semmitmondó nyilatkozatok helyett végre konkrét intézkedéseket várunk, de mindenekelőtt biztosítsanak ingyenes jogi képviseletet Balog Eliot számára.

(Habár az Emberi Jogi Központ alapvető céljai között szerepel a sértettek ingyenes jogi képviselete, feladatát nem tudja ellátni, mivel már több mint két éve nem részesült magyar állami támogatásban. Amennyiben az ingyenes jogi képviselet biztosítása anyagi akadályokba ütközne, az MK forduljon ahhoz a néhány délvidéki magyar szervezethez, amelyek kiváltságos helyzetüknél fogva a Szülőföld Alap által odaítélt támogatások jelentős részét rendszerint megkapják.)

II. Rákóczi Ferenc 1676. március 27-én a Rákóczi hercegségben a felvidéki Borsiban született ahonnét üstökösként indul el élete - nemzeti történelmünk legfényesebb csillaga -, hogy a későbbi Magyarországnak és a világnak ragyogjon önfeláldozó hazaszeretete. Édesapját I. Rákóczi Ferencet korai halála miatt nem ismerhette meg. A Nagy Magyar Szabadságharc vezére és legkiválóbb egyénisége apai ágon régi nemesi magyar család, az Árpád-kori Bogát - Radván nemzetségből származott. A másik az anyai ág kiváló ősei a híres, nagy történelmi múlttal rendelkező Zrínyi család. Híres felmenője gróf Zrínyi Miklós Szigetvár hős védője, aki a török elleni és a hazát oltalmazó szabadságküzdelmek mártírja lett. A leghíresebb, gróf Zrínyi Miklós a politikus, költő és hadvezér a nagyapa testvére. Zrínyi Ilona hercegnő - fejedelemasszony, Munkács várának hős védője csodálatos asszonyként vívta “Dávid és Góliát” küzdelmét, három évig ellenállva a Habsburg támadásoknak. Miután elárulták a hős védőt, a császár Bécsbe hurcoltatta Zrínyi Ilonát, akitől örökre elszakították kisgyermekét “Ferkó” 1688. március 27-én, tizenkettedik születésnapján került Bécsbe, ahonnét azonnal a jezsuiták neuhaus-i rendházába vitték. Kiváló középiskolai eredményeit elérve egyetemi tanulmányait Prágában végezte. Idegen hatalmak örökre elszakították az anyát a fiától. A tragikus sorsú fejedelemasszony soha többé nem látta gyermekét, az imádott “kis Herceget”.

Felnőttként hazatérve kiáltványban szólította harcba Magyarország minden “nemes és nemtelen” lakosát. Esze Tamásnak átadta a “Cum Deo pro Patria et Libertate” (Istennel a Hazáért és a Szabadságért) feliratú piros selyemzászlókat. II. Rákóczi Ferenc herceg 1703. június 16-án - mindössze 27 évesen - lépte át jelképesen a Vereckei-hágónál a magyar határt. Ezzel a népi kezdeményezésű felkeléssel megkezdődött a nyolc évig tartó Nagy Magyar Rákóczi Szabadságharc.

Külföldi kortársa így írt róla: “A legjobban csodálható méltóságteljes megjelenése, okossága, ötletessége, előkelő modora és erénye. Nemzetéhez hű, vallásában igen hívő, igazmondó, szép termetű, igen tudós, vitéz ember.”

Adja meg az Isten a magyar nemzetnek, hogy mielőbb a Nagyságos Fejedelemhez hasonló, tisztalelkű, hívő és igazságkereső államférfi álljon a szegény meggyötört Hazánk élére.

Central America: An Emerging Role in The Drug Trade

As part of STRATFOR’s coverage of the security situation in Mexico, we have observed some significant developments in the drug trade in the Western Hemisphere over the past year. While the United States remains the top destination for South American-produced cocaine, and Mexico continues to serve as the primary transshipment route, the path between Mexico and South America is clearly changing.

These changes have been most pronounced in Central America, where Mexican drug-trafficking organizations have begun to rely increasingly on land-based smuggling routes as several countries in the region have stepped up monitoring and interdiction of airborne and maritime shipments transiting from South America to Mexico.

The results of these changes have been extraordinary. According to a December 2008 report from the U.S. National Drug Intelligence Center, less than 1 percent of the estimated 600 to 700 tons of cocaine that departed South America for the United States in 2007 transited Central America. The rest, for the most part, passed through the Caribbean Sea or Pacific Ocean en route to Mexico. Since then, land-based shipment of cocaine through Central America appears to have ballooned. Earlier this month, U.S. Ambassador to Guatemala Stephen McFarland estimated in an interview with a Guatemalan newspaper that cocaine now passes through that country at a rate of approximately 300 to 400 tons per year.

Notwithstanding the difficulty associated with estimating drug flows, it is clear that Central America has evolved into a significant transshipment route for drugs, and that the changes have taken place rapidly. These developments warrant a closer look at the mechanics of the drug trade in the region, the actors involved, and the implications for Central American governments — for whom drug-trafficking organizations represent a much more daunting threat than they do for Mexico.

Some Background

While the drug trade in the Western Hemisphere is multifaceted, it fundamentally revolves around the trafficking of South American-produced cocaine to the United States, the world’s largest market for the drug. Drug shipment routes between Peru and Colombia — where the vast majority of cocaine is cultivated and produced — and the United States historically have been flexible, evolving in response to interdiction efforts or changing markets. For example, Colombian drug traffickers used to control the bulk of the cocaine trade by managing shipping routes along the Caribbean smuggling corridor directly to the United States. By the 1990s, however, as the United States and other countries began to focus surveillance and interdiction efforts along this corridor, the flow of U.S.-bound drugs was forced into Mexico, which remains the main transshipment route for the overwhelming majority of cocaine entering the United States.

A similar situation has been occurring over the last two years in Central America. From the 1990s until as recently as 2007, traffickers in Mexico received multiton shipments of cocaine from South America. There was ample evidence of this, including occasional discoveries of bulk cocaine on everything from small propeller aircraft and Gulfstream jets to self-propelled semisubmersible vessels, fishing trawlers and cargo ships. These smuggling platforms had sufficient range and capacity to bypass Central America and ship bulk drugs directly to Mexico.

By early 2008, however, a series of developments in several Central American countries suggested that drug-trafficking organizations — Mexican cartels in particular — were increasingly trying to establish new land-based smuggling routes through Central America for cocaine shipments from South America to Mexico and eventual delivery to the United States. While small quantities of drugs had certainly transited the region in the past, the routes used presented an assortment of risks. A combination of poorly maintained highways, frequent border crossings, volatile security conditions and unpredictable local criminal organizations apparently presented such great logistical challenges that traffickers opted to send the majority of their shipments through well-established maritime and airborne platforms.

In response to this relatively unchecked international smuggling, several countries in the region began taking steps to increase the monitoring and interdiction of such shipments. The Colombian government, for one, stepped up monitoring of aircraft operating in its airspace. The Mexican government installed updated radar systems and reduced the number of airports authorized to receive flights originating in Central and South America. The Colombian government estimates that the aerial trafficking of cocaine from Colombia has decreased by as much as 90 percent since 2003.

Maritime trafficking also appears to have suffered over the past few years, most likely due to greater cooperation and information-sharing between Mexico and the United States. The United States has an immense capability to collect maritime technical intelligence, and an increasing degree of awareness regarding drug trafficking at sea. Two examples of this progress include the Mexican navy’s July 2008 capture — acting on intelligence provided by the United States — of a self-propelled semisubmersible vessel loaded with more than five tons of cocaine, and the U.S. Coast Guard’s February 2009 interdiction of a Mexico-flagged fishing boat loaded with some seven tons of cocaine about 700 miles off Mexico’s Pacific coast. Presumably as a result of successes such as these, the Mexican navy reported in 2008 that maritime trafficking had decreased by an estimated 60 percent over the last two years.

While it is impossible to independently corroborate the Mexican and Colombian governments’ estimates on the degree to which air- and seaborne drug trafficking has decreased over the last few years, developments in Central America over the past year certainly support their assessments. In particular, STRATFOR has observed that in order to make up for losses in maritime and aerial trafficking, land-based smuggling routes are increasingly being used — not by Colombian cocaine producers or even Central American drug gangs, but by the now much more powerful Mexican drug-trafficking organizations.

Mechanics of Central American Drug Trafficking

It is important to clarify that what we are defining as land-based trafficking is not limited to overland smuggling. The methods associated with land-based trafficking can be divided into three categories: overland smuggling, littoral maritime trafficking and short-range aerial trafficking.

The most straightforward of these is simple overland smuggling. As a series of investigations in Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua demonstrated last year, overland smuggling operations use a wide variety of approaches. In one case, authorities pieced together a portion of a route being used by Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel in which small quantities of drugs entered Costa Rica from Panama via the international point of entry on the Pan-American Highway. The cocaine was often held for several days in a storage facility before being loaded onto another vehicle to be driven across the country on major highways. Upon approaching the Nicaraguan border, however, the traffickers opted to avoid the official port of entry and instead transferred the shipments into Nicaragua on foot or on horseback along a remote part of the border. Once across, the shipments were taken to the shores of the large inland Lake Nicaragua, where they were transferred onto boats to be taken north, at which point they would be loaded onto vehicles to be driven toward the Honduran border. In one case in Nicaragua, authorities uncovered another Sinaloa-linked route that passed through Managua and is believed to have followed the Pan-American Highway through Honduras and into El Salvador.

The second method associated with land-based trafficking involves littoral maritime operations. Whereas long-range maritime trafficking involves large cargo ships and self-propelled semisubmersible vessels capable of delivering multiton shipments of drugs from South America to Mexico without having to refuel, littoral trafficking tends to involve so-called “go-fast boats” that are used to carry smaller quantities of drugs at higher speeds over shorter distances. This method is useful to traffickers who might want to avoid, for whatever reason, a certain stretch of highway or perhaps even an entire country. According to Nicaraguan military officials, several go-fast boats are suspected of operating off the country’s coasts and of sailing outside Nicaraguan territorial waters in order to avoid authorities. While it is possible to make the entire trip from South America to Mexico using only this method — and making frequent refueling stops — it is believed that littoral trafficking is often combined with an overland network.

The third method associated with land-based drug smuggling involves short-range aerial operations. In these cases, clandestine planes make stops in Central America before either transferring their cargo to a land vehicle or making another short flight toward Mexico. Over the past year, several small planes loaded with drugs or cash have crashed or been seized in Honduras, Mexico and other countries in the region. In addition, authorities in Guatemala have uncovered several clandestine airstrips allegedly managed by the Mexican drug-trafficking organization Los Zetas. These examples suggest that even as overall aerial trafficking appears to have decreased dramatically, the practice continues in Central America. Indeed, there is little reason to expect that it would not continue, considering that many countries in the region lack the resources to adequately monitor their airspace.

While each of these three methods involves a different approach to drug smuggling, the methods share two important similarities. For one, the vehicles involved — be they speedboats, small aircraft or private vehicles — have limited cargo capacities, which means land-based trafficking generally involves cocaine shipments in quantities no greater than a few hundred pounds. While smaller quantities in more frequent shipments mean more handling, they also mean that less product is lost if a shipment is seized. More importantly, each of these land-based methods requires that a drug-trafficking organization maintain a presence inside Central America.

Actors Involved

There are a variety of drug-trafficking organizations operating inside Central America. In addition to some of the notorious local gangs — such as Calle 18 and MS-13 — there is also a healthy presence of foreign criminal organizations. Colombian drug traffickers, for example, historically have been no strangers to the region. However, as STRATFOR has observed over the past year, it is the more powerful Mexico-based drug-trafficking organizations that appear to be overwhelmingly responsible for the recent upticks in land-based narcotics smuggling in Central America.

Based on reports of arrests and drug seizures in the region over the past year, it is clear that no single Mexican cartel maintains a monopoly on land-based drug trafficking in Central America. Los Zetas, for example, are extremely active in several parts of Guatemala, where they engage in overland and short-range aerial trafficking. The Sinaloa cartel, which STRATFOR believes is the most capable Mexican trafficker of cocaine, has been detected operating a fairly extensive overland smuggling route from Panama to El Salvador. Some intelligence gaps remain regarding, for example, the precise route Sinaloa follows from El Salvador to Mexico or the route Los Zetas use between South America and Guatemala. It is certainly possible that these two Mexican cartels do not rely exclusively on any single route or method in the region. But the logistical challenges associated with establishing even one route across Central America make it likely that existing routes are maintained even after they have been detected — and are defended if necessary.

The operators of the Mexican cartel-managed routes also do not match a single profile. At times, Mexican cartel members themselves have been found to be operating in Central America. More common is the involvement of locals in various phases of smuggling operations. Nicaraguan and Salvadoran nationals, for example, have been arrested in northwestern Nicaragua for operating a Sinaloa-linked overland and littoral route into El Salvador. Authorities in Costa Rica have arrested Costa Rican nationals for their involvement in overland routes through that country. In that case, a related investigation in Panama led to the arrest of several Mexican nationals who reportedly had recently arrived in the area to more closely monitor the operation of their route.

One exception is Guatemala, where Mexican drug traffickers appear to operate much more extensively than in any other Central American country; this may be due, at least in part, to the relationship between Los Zetas and the Guatemalan Kaibiles. Beyond the apparently more-established Zeta smuggling operations there, several recent drug seizures — including an enormous 1,800-acre poppy plantation attributed to the Sinaloa cartel — make it clear that other Mexican drug-trafficking organizations are currently active inside Guatemala. Sinaloa was first suspected of increasing its presence in Guatemala in early 2008, when rumors surfaced that the cartel was attempting to recruit local criminal organizations to support its own drug-trafficking operations there. The ongoing Zeta-Sinaloa rivalry at that time triggered a series of deadly firefights in Guatemala, prompting fears that the bloody turf battles that had led to record levels of organized crime-related violence inside Mexico would extend into Central America.

Security Implications in Central America

Despite these concerns and the growing presence of Mexican traffickers in the region, there apparently have been no significant spikes in drug-related violence in Central America outside of Guatemala. Several factors may explain this relative lack of violence.

First, most governments in Central America have yet to launch large-scale counternarcotics campaigns. The seizures and arrests that have been reported so far have generally been the result of regular police work, as opposed to broad changes in policies or a significant commitment of resources to address the problem. More significantly, though, the quantities of drugs seized probably amount to just a drop in the bucket compared to the quantity of drugs that moves through the region on a regular basis. Because seizures have remained low, Mexican drug traffickers have yet to launch any significant reprisal attacks against government officials in any country outside Guatemala. In that country, even the president has received death threats and had his office bugged, allegedly by drug traffickers.

The second factor, which is related to the first, is that drug traffickers operating in Central America likely rely more heavily on bribes than on intimidation to secure the transit of drug shipments. This assessment follows from the region’s reputation for official corruption (especially in countries like Nicaragua, Honduras, Panama and Guatemala) and the economic disadvantage that many of these countries face compared to the Mexican cartels. For example, the gross domestic product of Honduras is $12 billion, while the estimated share of the drug trade controlled by the Mexican cartels is estimated to be $20 billion.

Finally, Mexican cartels currently have their hands full at home. Although Central America has undeniably become more strategically important for the flow of drugs from South America, the cartels in Mexico have simultaneously been engaged in a two-front war at home against the Mexican government and against rival criminal organizations. As long as this war continues at its present level, Mexican drug traffickers may be reluctant to divert significant resources too far from their home turf, which remains crucial in delivering drug shipments to the United States.

Looking Ahead

That said, there is no guarantee that Central America will continue to escape the wrath of Mexican drug traffickers. On the contrary, there is reason for concern that the region will increasingly become a battleground in the Mexican cartel war.

For one thing, the Merida Initiative, a U.S. anti-drug aid program that will put some $300 million into Mexico and about $100 million into Central America over the next year, could be perceived as a meaningful threat to drug-trafficking operations. If Central American governments choose to step up counternarcotics operations, either at the request of the United States or in order to qualify for more Merida money, they risk disrupting existing smuggling operations to the extent that cartels begin to retaliate.

Also, even though Mexican cartels may be reluctant to divert major resources from the more important war at home, it is important to recognize that a large-scale reassignment of cartel operatives or resources from Mexico to Central America might not be necessary to have a significant impact on the security situation in any given Central American country. Given the rampant corruption and relatively poor protective security programs in place for political leaders in the region, very few cartel operatives or resources would actually be needed if a Mexican drug-trafficking organization chose to, for example, conduct an assassination campaign against high-ranking government officials.

Governments are not the only potential threat to drug traffickers in Central America. The increases in land-based drug trafficking in the region could trigger intensified competition over trafficking routes. Such turf battles could occur either among the Mexican cartels or between the Mexicans and local criminal organizations, which might try to muscle their way into the lucrative smuggling routes or attempt to grab a larger percentage of the profits.

If the example of Mexico is any guide, the drug-related violence that could be unleashed in Central America would easily overwhelm the capabilities of the region’s governments. Last year, STRATFOR considered the possibility of Mexico becoming a failed state. But Mexico is a far stronger and richer country than its fragile southern neighbors, who simply do not have the resources to deal with the cartels on their own.

Turkey's fallout with Israel deals blow to settlers

A legal battle being waged by Palestinian families to stop the takeover of their neighborhood in East Jerusalem by Jewish settlers has received a major fillip from the recent souring of relations between Israel and Turkey.

After the Israeli army's assault on the Gaza Strip in January, lawyers for the families were given access to Ottoman land registry archives in Ankara for the first time, providing what they say is proof that title deeds produced by the settlers are forged.

On Monday, Palestinian lawyers presented the Ottoman documents to an Israeli court, which is expected to assess their validity over the next few weeks. The lawyers hope that proceedings to evict about 500 residents from Sheikh Jarrah will be halted.

The families' unprecedented access to the Turkish archives may mark a watershed, paving the way for successful appeals by other Palestinians in East Jerusalem and the West Bank caught in legal disputes with settlers and the Israeli government over land ownership.

Interest in the plight of Sheikh Jarrah's residents peaked in November when one couple, Fawziya and Mohammed Kurd, were evicted from their home by an Israeli judge. Mohammed Kurd, who was chronically ill, died days later.

Meanwhile, Fawziya Khurd, 63, has staged a protest by living in a tent on waste ground close to her former home. Israeli police have torn down the tent six times and she is facing a series of fines from the Jerusalem municipality.

The problems facing Kurd and the other residents derive from legal claims by the Sephardi Jewry Association that it purchased Sheikh Jarrah's land in the 19th century. Settler groups hope to evict all the residents, demolish their homes and build 200 apartments in their place.

The location is considered strategic by settler organizations because it is close to the Old City and its Palestinian holy places.

Unusually, foreign diplomats, including from the United States, have protested, saying eviction of the Palestinian families would undermine the basis of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The help of the Turkish government has been crucial, however, because Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire when the land transactions supposedly took place.

Israel and Turkey have been close military and political allies for decades and traditionally Ankara has avoided straining ties by becoming involved in land disputes in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. But there appears to have been an about-turn in Turkish government policy since a diplomatic falling-out between the two countries over Israel's recent Gaza operation.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey's prime minister, accused his Israeli counterpart, Ehud Olmert, of "lying" and "back-stabbing," reportedly furious that Israel launched its military operation without warning him. At the time of the attack, Turkey was mediating peace negotiations between Israel and Syria.

Days after the fighting ended in Gaza, Erdogan stormed out of a meeting of the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, having accused Shimon Peres, the Israeli president, of "knowing very well how to kill."

According to lawyers acting for the Sheikh Jarrah families, the crisis in relations has translated into a greater openness from Ankara in helping them in their legal battle.

"We have noticed a dramatic change in the atmosphere now when we approach Turkish officials," said Hatem Abu Ahmad, one of Kurd's lawyers. "Before they did not dare upset Israel and put us off with excuses about why they could not help."

He said the families' lawyers were finally invited to the archives in Ankara in January, after they submitted requests over several months to the Turkish consulate in Jerusalem and the Turkish Embassy in Tel Aviv.

Officials in Turkey traced the documents the lawyers requested and provided affidavits that the settlers' land claims were forged. The search of the Ottoman archives, Abu Ahmad said, had failed to locate any title deeds belonging to a Jewish group for the land in Sheikh Jarrah.

"Turkish officials have also told us that in future they will assist us whenever we need help and that they are ready to trace similar documents relating to other cases," Abu Ahmad said. "They even asked us if there were other documents we were looking for."

That could prove significant as the Jerusalem municipality threatens a new campaign of house demolitions against Palestinians. Last week, Nabil Abu Rudeina, a spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, called the recent issuing of dozens of demolition orders in Jerusalem "ethnic cleansing."

Palestinian legal groups regularly argue that settlers forge documents in a bid to grab land from private Palestinian owners but have great difficulty proving their case.

Late last year the Associated Press news agency exposed a scam by settlers regarding land on which they have built the Migron outpost, near Ramallah, home to more than 40 Jewish families. The settlers' documents were supposedly signed by the Palestinian owner, Abdel Latif Sumarin, in California in 2004, even though he died in 1961.

The families in Sheikh Jarrah ended up living in their current homes after they were forced to flee from territory that became Israel during the 1948 war. Jordan, which controlled East Jerusalem until Israel's occupation in 1967, and the United Nations gave the refugees plots on which to build homes.

Kurd said she would stay in her tent until she received justice.

"My family is originally from Talbiyeh," she said, referring to what has become today one of the wealthiest districts of West Jerusalem. "I am not allowed to go back to the property that is rightfully mine, but these settlers are given my home, which never belonged to them."

Sokat nézhettük ezt a tablót az elmúlt huszonnégy órában, minden címlapon a nagy hármas: Surányi, Glatz, Vértes. A remény arcai. Jézusom!

Hogy ki mennyire Amway [1], ki mennyire volt szorgos támasza [2] a letűnt rendszernek, ki mennyire megbízható szaki, azt ne is kaparásszuk. Miért van az az érzésünk, mintha három Demján Sándort látnánk (ráadásul a skálás, és nem az orosz lottós korszakból)? Tényleg a nejlongarbólobbi állhat Gyurcsány megbuktatása mögött?

Ebből a csapatból már fazonra is kitűnne Bokros. Ebben a csapatban még egyéniségnek tűnne, lendületesnek, hitelesnek. Komolyabb ötletet vagy víziót abból az arcból sem néznénk ki, de legalább valamit. Mégis, hogy működne egy ilyen? Hány MSZP-tagozattal kellene egyeztetni félóránként a különböző gazdaságpolitikai lépéseket? Milyen csodaprogramot lehet kitalálni, ami az elmúlt három évben nem jutott eszébe Gyurcsánynak?

Még egy év agónia biturbó. Minek?

De még az is merész feltételezés, hogy ez a manőver lehetőséget teremtene Gyurcsány Ferencnek a 2014-es visszatérésre. Ugyan. Legföljebb ha az aranyhalak választójogot kapnának.

Akkor tényleg, miért csinálják? (De sokszor feltettük ezt a kérdést az utóbbi három évben.)

Más magyarázat nincs, mint hogy viszi őket előre a fene nagy politikai logika, vagy mi. Illetve, a Magyar Nemzet-esebb verzió, hogy még sürgős eltulajdonítani valók vannak a közös kasszában, és nem más, hanem éppen ez volna az a bizonyos politikai logika, amiből nem tud és nem hajlandó kilépni senki.

Mert ugyan 2006-ban mi értelme volt [3] megnyerni a választásokat úgy? Ha Gyurcsány fele akkora stratéga és fele olyan éleseszű politikus volna, mint amilyennek láttatni szereti magát, akkor rájött volna: az égvilágon semmi értelme sincs. A nagy terveket, a társadalom- és országátformáló programokat (ha ugyan voltak ilyenek) nem lehet sumákban végrehajtani. Meg úgysem, hogy odaállok, azt mondom, hazudtam, és aztán minden másképp lesz.

Ezt sem gondolták végig, semmit sem gondoltak végig, nem volt más, csak nagy löttyös indulat, a kérlelhetetlen belső logika, győzni kell, bármi áron, kormányozni bármi áron, és aztán majd kiderül, hogy mi a cél. Nem derült ki.

Most viszont lenne cél: megállítani a lecsúszást és valahogy kimászni az orrig érő szarból. Erre ez a struktúra alkalmatlan. Erre ez a félkisebbségi, félszakértői kavarás alkalmatlan. Az MSZP alkalmatlan.

Vajon mikor esik le egy-két tucatnyi SZDSZ-es és szoci képviselőnek, hogy értelmetlen és káros, amihez asszisztálnak? Hogy senkinek sem tesznek jót, még maguknak sem.

(Akkor majd jöhet a Fidesz, és aztán tényleg lehet hosszan töprengeni azon, hogy tényleg mi értelme volt ennek a 2006–2009-es izének.)

The late President Milosevic's secret police chief and organiser of Serb death squads during the genocidal ethnic cleansing of disintegrating Yugoslavia was the United States' top CIA agent in Belgrade, according to the independent Belgrade Radio B92.
The claim that from 1992 until the end of the decade, Jovica Stanisic, head of Serbia's murderous DB Secret Police, was regularly informing his CIA handlers of the thinking in Milosevic's inner circle has shocked the region. Stanisic is said to have loyally served his two masters for eight years.

He is facing war crimes charges at the International Criminal Court at The Hague.
In the terrifying years of Yugoslavia's internecine wars, he acted as the willing "muscle" behind Milosevic's genocidal campaigns in Croatia, Kosovo and Bosnia, including Sebrenica.
According to the charges he faces, Stanisic was "part of a joint criminal enterprise that included former Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic and other Serbian politicians".
Dermot Groome, The Hague's chief prosecutor, has specifically accused him of sending in the Serb Scorpion and Red Beret death squads into the states seeking independence from Belgrade. Stanisic has pleaded not guilty.
Like in a Cold War spy thriller, Serbia's secret police chief met his CIA handlers in safe houses, parks and boats on the river Sava to betray his master's action plans. He provided, it is claimed, information on the where abouts of Nato hostages, aided CIA operatives in their search for Muslim mass graves and helped the US set up secret bases in Bosnia to monitor the implementation of the 1995 Dayton peace accord.
This has raised awkward questions for Washington. With Stanisic providing chapter and verse of the genocidal slaughter of Croats, Bosnians and Albanians from the early 1990s, should President Clinton have cut a deal with Milosevic at Dayton, Ohio, ending the Bosnian war on such equitable terms for the Serbs?

Or, using Stanisic's evidence, should the Americans not have unmasked Milosevic and Radovan Karadzic, the then head of Republika Srpska, as genocidal war criminals and demanded their surrender?
From his prison cell at The Hague, Stanisic countered the charges facing him with an aide memoir portraying himself as "a person who had sought to moderate Milosevic and had done a great deal to moderate the crisis".
In an unusual move, the CIA has submitted classified documents to the court that confirm Stanisic's "undercover operative role in helping to bring peace to the region and aiding the agency's work. "Thus the judges at The Hague are having to judge a man who allegedly sent the Scorpion death squads to Srebrenica to "deal" with men and boys fleeing the UN-protected Muslim enclave, while working with the CIA trying to end Milosevic's ethnic wars.
The way the CIA apparently viewed their Belgrade "asset" is revealed in an interview with Balkan Insight, a little known south-east European publication.
The emerging picture is a quaint reflection from a hall of mirrors. Greg Miller of the Los Angeles Times, writing about the links between the CIA and the Serb secret police chief, is quoted as saying: "As I said in the LAT story, the CIA do not see Stanisic as a choirboy. When you talk to people who work in espionage, this is often the case.
"Because of the nature of that job, of that assignment, they are working with people who do not have unblemished records, it would be difficult for them to be effective if they only worked with people who had unblemished records."
People in Belgrade who have been following the career of Jovica Stanisic would say that this was a guy who was an expert in his field; he was ahighly-trained and highly-effective spy. His motivation may have been tha the wanted to know what the United States was up to.
"He did not believe that Milosevic was taking the country in the right direction - so he wanted to influence events. He saw himself as an important guy who could pull strings behind the scenes to make things happen in Belgrade.
"Stanisic apparently did so on his own terms, while trying to remain a loyal Serb. He did not succeed. Now he is having to account for his actions as Milosevic's loyal lieutenantat The Hague.

Racist and sexist Israeli military shirts show the mindset that led to war crimes in Gaza

Ha'aretz is continuing to divulge soldier testimonies from Gaza. You can find the fullest report yet here. The messianic fervor that fueled the Israeli policy of collective punishment is laid bare.I'm not going to comment on it yet, just go read it.

There is another report in today's Ha'aretz that I do want to comment on. Uri Blau's article "'No virgins, no terror attacks'" describes the practice of Israeli soldiers getting custom clothing printed with their unit's insignia along with graphics and text. Below are some examples of shirts that were printed, along with some of the images. These images only appeared on Ha'aretz's Hebrew-language website:

A T-shirt for infantry snipers bears the inscription "Better use Durex," next to a picture of a dead Palestinian baby, with his weeping mother and a teddy bear beside him.
A sharpshooter's T-shirt from the Givati Brigade's Shaked battalion shows a pregnant Palestinian woman with a bull's-eye superimposed on her belly, with the slogan, in English, "1 shot, 2 kills."
After Operation Cast Lead, soldiers from that battalion printed a T-shirt depicting a vulture sexually penetrating Hamas' prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh
A "graduation" shirt for those who have completed another snipers course depicts a Palestinian baby, who grows into a combative boy and then an armed adult, with the inscription, "No matter how it begins, we'll put an end to it."
There are also plenty of shirts with blatant sexual messages. For example, the Lavi battalion produced a shirt featuring a drawing of a soldier next to a young woman with bruises, and the slogan, "Bet you got raped!"
A few of the images underscore actions whose existence the army officially denies - such as "confirming the kill" (shooting a bullet into an enemy victim's head from close range, to ensure he is dead), or harming religious sites, or female or child non-combatants.
"Let every Arab mother know that her son's fate is in my hands!" had previously been banned for use on another infantry unit's shirt. A Givati soldier said this week, however, that at the end of last year, his platoon printed up dozens of shirts, fleece jackets and pants bearing this slogan.
"It has a drawing depicting a soldier as the Angel of Death, next to a gun and an Arab town," he explains. "The text was very powerful. The funniest part was that when our soldier came to get the shirts, the man who printed them was an Arab, and the soldier felt so bad that he told the girl at the counter to bring them to him."
In 2006, soldiers from the "Carmon Team" course for elite-unit marksmen printed a shirt with a drawing of a knife-wielding Palestinian in the crosshairs of a gun sight, and the slogan, "You've got to run fast, run fast, run fast, before it's all over." Below is a drawing of Arab women weeping over a grave and the words: "And afterward they cry, and afterward they cry." [The inscriptions are riffs on a popular song.]
Another sniper's shirt also features an Arab man in the crosshairs, and the announcement, "Everything is with the best of intentions."
A shirt printed after Operation Cast Lead in Gaza for Battalion 890 of the Paratroops depicts a King Kong-like soldier in a city under attack. The slogan is unambiguous: "If you believe it can be fixed, then believe it can be destroyed!"

These shirts have to get the approval from IDF commanders and are a military tradition, although the explicit nature of these shirts seem new. Bar-Ilan University Sociologist Dr. Orna Sasson-Levy is quoted as saying the shirts are "part of a radicalization process the entire country is undergoing, and the soldiers are at its forefront." Israeli anti-militarism activist Sergeiy Sandler, who works for the important organization New Profile, emailed this article out saying the shirts are "a long-standing tradition in Israeli military units; you see those shirts, although usually with less outrageous designs, on the streets all over the place. A picture's worth a thousand words, isn't it?"

I don't imagine these types of shirts are unique to Israel. I bet there are similar ones created by US soldiers in Iraq. But the shirts do point to an environment where mass war crimes can be carried out. They reflect a mindset where Palestinian life is disdained, when it's even acknowledged. One of the soldiers says it best in their testimony describing the killing of a mother and her two children: "the atmosphere in general, from what I understood from most of my men who I talked to ... I don't know how to describe it .... The lives of Palestinians, let's say, is something very, very less important than the lives of our soldiers. So as far as they are concerned they can justify it that way."

Március 21-én, az 1919-es vörös kommün kilencvenedik évfordulóján két rendezvénnyel emlékezünk meg a rémuralom áldozatairól.

13 órától a Magyarok Házában a Bombagyár Filmklub exkluzív vetítésen mutatja be a Szovjet sztori című filmet, magyar felirattal. A belépődíj 800 forint. (Ha a DVD nem ér ide addig, akkor is megnézzük, de akkor sajnos lett nyelvű feliratra tesszük rá a magyart, mert a film csak ilyen formában lelhető fel a neten.)

16 órakor pedig a Clark Ádám téren szerény ünnepség keretében felavatjuk a Bombagyár olvasóinak és a Hollán család leszármazottainak adományaiból és a Varga és Fiai Kőfaragó Kft. segítségével felújított, 63 évvel ezelőtt Rákosi Mátyás által leveretett lánchídi emléktáblát, amely az ott kivégzett kislődi Hollán Sándornak és fiának, ifj. Hollán Sándornak, a Szent István-rend vitézeinek állít emléket.

Szeretettel meghívjuk minden kedves magyar honfitársunkat e két eseményre. Hozzatok magatokkal magyar zászlót, illetve egy-egy szál virágot, hogy mártírjainkról méltóképpen megemlékezhessünk.

Muchas veces me han planteado esa pregunta.
La misma que le hizo la Revista Littérature en 1919 a cien escritores franceses: ¿Por qué escribe usted? París 1985. El diario Liberatión dirige de nuevo la misma pregunta a más de 400 escritores repartidos por los cinco continentes.
Y es la que se plantea a través del tiempo con una cantidad enorme de respuestas, tantas que tal vez nos aburriríamos de leerlas todas.
Este experimento de aquí más abajo es lo más cercano a lo que podría ser mi respuesta definitiva:

Hasonlót tett fel száz francia írónak a Littérature című folyóirat 1919. Ön, miért ír?. 1985 Párizs. A Liberation újra fölteszi a kérdést 400, a földkerekség öt kontinensen élő íróembernek.
Az idők folyamán óriási válaszfolyam gyűlt össze, annyi a válasz, hogy halálra unnánk magunkat az olvasástól.
Talán alábbi kísérlet áll a legközelebb a lehetséges végleges válaszomhoz.

"Secret" Red Cross Report Confirms More Torture at CIA Black Sites

Prisoners described being put in dog collars, having their heads slammed against walls, and forced inside "coffin-like" boxes.

A front page story in today's Washington Post reveals that a "secret report" by the International Committee of the Red Cross on the CIA's "black sites" has confirmed that the Bush administration used gross interrogation methods in its overseas prisons that "constituted torture" and violated the Geneva Conventions.

With the exception of five copies of the report that were passed on to the CIA and the White House in 2007, the findings were kept secret by the Red Cross "to preserve the humanitarian group's strict policy of neutrality in conflicts."

But journalist Mark Danner obtained excerpts of the report and has published them in the new edition of the New York Review of Books.

The report draws from Red Cross interviews in 2006 with 14 prisoners held in isolation at foreign CIA prisons, men who "gave remarkably uniform accounts of abuse that included beatings, sleep deprivation, extreme temperatures and, in some cases, waterboarding, or simulating drowning."

"Often using the detainee's own words," writes the Post, "the report offers a harrowing view of conditions at the secret prisons, where prisoners were told they were being taken 'to the verge of death and back,' according to one excerpt. During interrogations, the captives were routinely beaten, doused with cold water and slammed head-first into walls. Between sessions, they were stripped of clothing, bombarded with loud music, exposed to cold temperatures, and deprived of sleep and solid food for days on end. Some detainees described being forced to stand for days, with their arms shackled above them, wearing only diapers."

"On a daily basis … a collar was looped around my neck and then used to slam me against the walls of the interrogation room," the report quotes detainee Tawfiq bin Attash, also known as Walid Muhammad bin Attash, as saying. Later, he said, he was wrapped in a plastic sheet while cold water was "poured onto my body with buckets." He added: "I would be wrapped inside the sheet with cold water for several minutes. Then I would be taken for interrogation."

The report also contains descriptions of the prisoner Abu Zubaida, whose torture has been previously documented.

"Abu Zubaida said interrogators wrapped a towel around his neck and slammed him into a plywood wall mounted in his cell. He was also repeatedly slapped in the face, he said. After the beatings, he was placed in coffinlike wooden boxes in which he was forced to crouch, with no light and a restricted air supply, he said."

"The stress on my legs held in this position meant my wounds both in my leg and stomach became very painful," he told the ICRC.

After he was removed from a small box, he said, he was strapped to what looked like a hospital bed and waterboarded. "A black cloth was then placed over my face and the interrogators used a mineral bottle to pour water on the cloth so that I could not breathe," Abu Zubaida said.

After breaks to allow him to recover, the waterboarding continued.

CIA Confirms 12 of 92 Videotapes Destroyed Showed Prisoners Tortured

ACLU: "This new information underscores the need for full and immediate disclosure of the CIA's illegal interrogation methods."

Heavily redacted government documents filed in a New York federal court Friday afternoon say the CIA destroyed 12 videotapes that specifically showed two detainees being tortured.

The documents were filed in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union. In December 2007, the ACLU filed a motion to hold the CIA in contempt for its destruction of the tapes in violation of a court order requiring the agency to produce or identify all records requested by the ACLU. That motion is still pending.

On Monday, the Justice Department revealed in court documents that the CIA destroyed 92 interrogation videotapes, which is now the subject of a criminal probe. According to Friday's court documents, 90 tapes relate to one detainee and two tapes relate to another detainee.

In a letter filed Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Acting U.S. Attorney Lev Dassin said a complete list of summaries, transcripts or memoranda related to the videotapes would be filed with the court by March 20.

"The government is needlessly withholding information about these tapes from the public, despite the fact that the CIA's use of torture -- including waterboarding -- is no secret," said Amrit Singh, staff attorney with the ACLU. "This new information only underscores the need for full and immediate disclosure of the CIA's illegal interrogation methods. The time has come for the CIA to be held accountable for flouting the rule of law."

On March 2, the Justice Department said in court documents the CIA destroyed 92 videotapes -- far more than previously known -- to prevent disclosure of evidence revealing how the agency's interrogators subjected "war on terror" detainees to waterboarding and other brutal methods.

"The CIA can now identify the number of videotapes that were destroyed," said a letter written by Acting U.S. Attorney Lev Dassin and filed in federal court in New York. "Ninety-two videotapes were destroyed."

Previously, the CIA had disclosed that it had destroyed two videotapes and one audiotape of harsh interrogations of detainees. The tape destruction has been the subject of a yearlong criminal investigation by John Durham, the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, who was appointed special prosecutor last year by Attorney General Michael Mukasey.

In the March 2 filing, Dassin noted that a stay of a contempt motion filed by the ACLU seeking release of the tapes was allowed to expire on February 28 without a request for a continuation -- signaling that Durham's investigation is now complete.

In January, Durham had indicated in a court filing that he expected to wrap up his probe by the end of February. The CIA has asked the court to give the agency until Friday to produce a list of all destroyed records, any memos relating to reconstruction of those records, and identification of witnesses who may have watched the videotapes before they were destroyed.

Dassin's letter said some information sought by the ACLU may be classified or "protected from disclosure, such as the names of the CIA employees who viewed the videotapes."

Dassin said the CIA "intends to produce all of the information requested to the court and to produce as much information as possible on the public record to the plaintiffs."

The videotaped interrogations, which were also withheld from the 9/11 Commission, were destroyed in November 2005 after The Washington Post published a story exposing the CIA's use of so-called "black site" prisons overseas to interrogate terror suspects with techniques that were not legal on U.S. soil.

The Zubaydah Case

The Post's story focused on alleged al-Qaeda operative Abu Zubaydah and the harsh methods that the CIA used on him and other detainees. Abu Zubaydah was captured in Pakistan on March 28, 2002, and was reportedly whisked to a secret prison site in Thailand for interrogation.

Initially, Zubaydah was somewhat cooperative, but later became tight-lipped when asked about alleged terrorist plots against the United States and the whereabouts of high-level al-Qaeda operatives.

In July 2002, a meeting was convened at the White House, where former White House counsel Alberto Gonzales, Justice Department attorney John Yoo, Vice President Dick Cheney, Cheney's attorney David Addington, and unknown CIA officials discussed whether the CIA could interrogate Zubaydah more aggressively in order to get him to respond.

It was at this July 2002 meeting that Yoo, Gonzales and Addington gave the CIA the green light to use a wide variety of techniques, including waterboarding, on Zubaydah and other detainees at several secret prisons to "break" them and force them to cooperate with interrogators, according to an account published in Newsweek in late December 2003.

Less than a month after the meeting, on August 1, 2002, Yoo drafted a memo to Gonzales that was signed by Jay Bybee, the assistant attorney general in charge of the Office of Legal Counsel. That memo declared that President Bush had the legal authority to allow CIA interrogators to employ harsh tactics to extract information from detainees.

Yoo's memo -- often called the "torture meme" -- said Congress "may no more regulate the President's ability to detain and interrogate enemy combatants than it may regulate his ability to direct troop movements on the battlefield."

Michael Chertoff, then head of the Justice Department's criminal division, reportedly advised the CIA General Counsel Scott Muller and his deputy, John Rizzo, that the August 1, 2002, legal opinion protected CIA interrogators from prosecution if they used waterboarding or other harsh tactics.

In February 2005, during his Senate confirmation hearing to become Homeland Security secretary, Chertoff said he provided the CIA broad guidance in response to its questions about interrogation methods, but never addressed the legality of specific techniques.

Bush Fixated

In the book The One Percent Doctrine, author Ron Suskind said Zubaydah was not the "high-value detainee" the CIA had claimed. Rather, Suskind wrote, Zubaydah was a minor player in the al-Qaeda organization, handling travel for associates and their families.

However, "Bush was fixated on how to get Zubaydah to tell us the truth," Suskind wrote. Bush asked one CIA briefer, "Do some of these harsh methods really work?"

Zubaydah was strapped to a waterboard and, fearing imminent death, he spoke about a wide range of plots against a number of U.S. targets, such as shopping malls, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. Yet, Suskind wrote, the information Zubaydah provided under duress was not credible.

According to Suskind, Zubaydah's captors soon discovered that their prisoner was mentally ill and knew nothing about terrorist operations or impending plots. That realization was "echoed at the top of CIA and was, of course, briefed to the President and Vice President," Suskind wrote.

Still, in public statements, President Bush portrayed Zubaydah as "one of the top operatives plotting and planning death and destruction on the United States" and added: "So, the CIA used an alternative set of procedures" to get Zubaydah to talk.

The President did not want to "lose face," because he had stated Zubaydah's importance publicly, Suskind wrote.

Last year, Mukasey appointed U.S. Attorney Durham as special counsel to investigate whether the destruction of the CIA videotapes violated any laws, but did not give Durham the authority to probe whether the interrogation techniques themselves violated anti-torture laws.

In December 2008, Bush and Cheney both admitted in exit interviews that they authorized the waterboarding of Zubaydah and two other detainees.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers proposed expanding the scope of Durham's investigation in January, to include a broader review of the Bush administration's interrogation policies.

Conyers said he urged Attorney General Eric Holder to "appoint a Special Counsel or expand the scope of the present investigation into CIA tape destruction to determine whether there were criminal violations committed pursuant to Bush administration policies that were undertaken under unreviewable war powers, including enhanced interrogation, extraordinary rendition, and warrantless domestic surveillance."

The Senate Intelligence Committee, chaired by Democrat Dianne Feinstein, will soon conduct a secret investigation into the CIA's interrogation program to determine whether the methods used against detainees worked, according to published reports.
